What is GI?
A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
Every region has its claim to fame. Darjeeling Tea, Chanderi Sarees, Bhagalpur Silks, Kashmir Saffron, Mysore Silk, Nagpur Orange, Kota Doria, Tirupati Laddu are some examples of GI tag products in India. Each product reputation was carefully built up and painstakingly maintained by the masters of that region, combining the best of Nature and Man, traditionally handed over from one generation to the next for centuries. Gradually, a specific link between the goods and place of production evolved resulting in growth of geographical indications.
What is GI Bharat?
According to the GI Registry official website till 2020 only 658 GI are registered in India. India has a rich potential for GI. Every region of India has its own specialty or uniqueness due to their environment, manufacturing process, product and art work. People / artisans are engaged in manufacturing of these unique products from generations. But due to various challenges their upcoming generations are not coming into this business. Due to this many arts or unique products have lost or being lost. There is a strict need of conservation and protection for these specialties.
